Abstract
The development of MOOCs is inextricably linked to institutional and governmental policies. On the one hand, the popularity of MOOCs has prompted institutions and governments to modify existing policies on online learning and distance education. On the other hand, educational policies also shape and boost the growth of MOOC platforms. This chapter provides an overview of the policies on MOOCs, at the global and local levels. Globally, intergovernmental institutions devise educational policies and guidelines to promote the adoption of MOOCs across different regions. Locally, the governments encourage the use of MOOCs in their countries through establishing organizations and providing funding support. These policies enhance the sustainability of MOOC platforms.
