Sustainable Renovation of Buildings

Abstract

Sustainability implies to understand our development as society far away from the momentary, the opportune and the superficial, considering the main idea that humans occupy a decentered position, instead of an empowered from natural resources position. IPCC partials reports belong to the sixth cycle of assessment that will publish on 2022 September alerts about the necessity of adopting actions immediately to ensure a livable future, pointing to cities as hotspots of impacts and risks, but a crucial part of the solution AR6 Synthesis Report: Climate Change. Even a narrowing window for action, urbanism, architecture, and construction—as part of a strategy sector responsible of 40% of total GHG emissions to the atmosphere—develop a key role between humanity and nature. Hence, environmental impact reduction of these activities must be a priority to rebalance our ecosystems. We explain in this chapter the objective of different strategies and scales; methods to quantify environmental and economic impacts, and we explore the opportunities of building information modelling to support different way to assessing sustainability.
