Abstract

This chapter reviews the challenges of evaluating panic attacks that develop after transplantation. We center our discussion around a case of a heart transplant patient which illustrates the difficulty in delineating the symptoms of panic attacks against the symptoms of cardiopulmonary disease. We will also review the impact of panic attacks on patients’ participation in medical care as they recover from major surgery and a life-changing event. We will also discuss the differences in approaches to the treatment of panic attacks in post-transplant patients compared to the general population.
