Raman Spectroscopy in Cultural Heritage Preservation

Abstract

The identification of pigments in ancient historiated manuscripts and paintings and their degradation products was the first application of Raman spectroscopy to cultural heritage. The advent of a range of laser wavelengths and modern instrumentation for fluorescence background rejection has enabled a wider application of the technique coupled with the minimal sampling required for Raman microscopy. A list of pigments and dyes studied by Raman spectroscopy is provided and examples given of case studies where degradation products have been identified. The availability of miniaturised portable spectrometers for on-site non-destructive evaluation is also covered.
