Abstract

The paper describes the D242 diesel engine configuration with a design modified to enable gas-diesel operation using compressed natural gas. A D242 diesel engine-based experimental unit scheme is described, comprising a system for supplying gas to the diesel engine cylinders and a system for controlling and monitoring supply indicators such as the gas fuel solenoid valve opening angle, gas fuel feed pressure, revolutions, and the diesel fuel supply rate as a percentage from the maximum possible value. Practical studies allowed adjusting the gas valve maximum opening angle on the aspirating stroke for various operating modes and evaluating the efficiency of the modifications made to the diesel engine design. The proposed design modifications allowed achieving the maximum diesel fuel substitution for natural gas in various operating modes. Also, design modifications have been assessed in terms of the environmental impact of the use of natural gas as a motor fuel for a diesel engine. The experimental study results allow concluding that changing the diesel engine design to use natural gas as a fuel is expedient. The environmental safety has been preliminarily forecasted in terms of CH, (NO)x, CO, and C emissions for gas-diesel and gas operation of modified diesel engines using diesel and natural gas - methane as fuels.
