Abstract

Anxiety treatment protocols in adolescents generally follow the same guidelines as treatment of anxiety in adults. In order to provide a working framework that considers the presence of substance use disorders in relation to anxiety, a biological perspective on anxiety is presented with a focus on a common mechanisms in common with substance use disorders. The premise of a shared pathophysiology allows for a heuristic useful to treatment approaches for both conditions.
