Abstract

This chapter deals with the artifacts that can occur during cytometric analyses, highlighting the so-called escapees and debris phenomena. It then considers the other artifacts most frequently reported in the literature, distinguishing them into artifacts due to (1) anticoagulants, (2) fluorochromes, and (3) serum factors. Finally, it reports exceptionally rare artifacts that anecdotally appeared in the literature. For each artifact, the chapter describes, where possible, the causal mechanisms and suggests practical advice to prevent the phenomenon.
