Panic Buying and Environmental Disasters

Abstract

Hoarding or over-purchasing of the basic commodities in times of any disaster. In the absence of a real shortage of products and services, it is termed as panic buying based on the perceived scarcity of resources as an outcome of any calamity. In times of crisis that may affect the e-commerce as well or that is affecting just the e-commerce may arouse a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety among the consumers. Consumers may irrationally purchase from the available e-commerce sites in order to protect themselves from confronting scarcity of products and services. Moreover, during any disaster, since the online purchasing is the preferred method of acquiring products, any hindrance may lead to the development of uncertainty among the consumers. This chapter highlights the impact of environmental disasters on e-commerce and how panic buying and e-commerce effect one another during disasters. Moreover, it outlines the effect of e-commerce in controlling panic buying, disaster risk reduction, and disaster co** mechanisms.
