Definitions

Intimate partner violence (IPV) can broadly be defined as abuse or aggression toward a romantic partner (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021) that includes physical, sexual, or emotional/psychological harm (National Institute of Justice, 2007). IPV can occur in current or former intimate spousal or dating relationships of the same or opposite gender (Rennison & Welchans, 2002) and includes domestic/cohabitating intimate couples (Begun, 1999). Physical abuse is intentionally aggressive and violent behavior toward another individual that results in bodily harm. Acts of physical abuse comprise forms of physical assault, such as hitting, slap**, kicking, and beating (World Health Organization, 2012). Emotional abuse is nonphysical acts with the intention of controlling, isolating, or frightening the victim.
