Greater weever (Trachinus draco) – a venomous marine fish of Actinopterygii(Trachinidae) family, one of the most venomous marine dwellers in the temperate zone. The fish of the Ionian and Mediterranean seas is black in color, and the body length does not exceed 45 cm. It dwells on the muddy or sandy bottom of bays and gulfs. It feeds on small fish, worms, and crustaceans. If there is danger, this fish first makes a warning in the form of an expanded fin, and, if necessary, jumps out of its shelter and pierces the enemy with a poisoned thorn. Due to its subterranean lifestyles, aggressiveness, and high toxicity, the greater weaver is especially dangerous for swimmers near the shore, walking barefoot in shallow water, as well as for fishermen. It has a very strong venom similar to that of a snake. People affected by the greater weaver have inflammation and swelling of the affected areas, loss of consciousness, vomiting, convulsions, and an irregular heart rhythm. Some cases are fatal....
