Pharmacovigilance for Herbal and Traditional Medicines

Abstract

The Ministry of Health (MOH) in Oman has put in place rules and regulations for monitoring, registering, and analyzing herbal medicines and traditional medicines due to the increased demand for these medicines. Since safety is a fundamental principle in the provision of herbal medicines and herbal products for healthcare, the Department of Pharmacovigilance & Drug Information (DPV&DI) plays a crucial role in monitoring and evaluating these medicines. To achieve this goal, an herbovigilance system has been implemented in Oman since 2015.

The main goals for herbovigilance in Oman include improving patient care and safety in relation to the use of herbal and traditional medicines, and promoting, understanding, educating and clinical training in PV and its effective communication to the public. Safety/risk communication strategies have been adopted for herbal medicines, including the detection of counterfeit herbal medicines, or other finished products that are labeled as being of herbal origin but that are adulterated with chemical ingredients.

The DPV&DI has an active communication and collaboration with other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries, the International Society of Pharmacovigilance (ISoP), and its Special Interest Group (SIG) on herbal and traditional medicines.
