Abstract

One of the consequences of the 1848 revolutionary year was the widespread school reform. The subjects taught originally at the philosophical institutes were transferred partially to the 6-year Gymnasia as the 7th and 8th grades, and partially to the technical secondary-level schools. Additional instructors were needed to teach in the extended grades. The 6-year Gymnasium in Znojmo planned to open a seventh grade. The Governor Lažansky invited Mendel to serve as a substitute (supply) teacher. Mendel’s superior Napp welcomed the invitation for Mendel to teach in Znojmo. Originally, he wanted Mendel to pass a philosophical rigorosum and become a candidate of teaching at the Philosophical Institute in Brno that was the domain of the Old Brno Augustinians.
