Abstract
In this chapter we begin work on our second narrative A Woman’s College from the Outside by Virginia Woolf (1926). The chapter explores the narrative by considering Woolf’s use of the grammatical elements we have considered in previous chapters. We do this in the same order as we considered Joyce’s uses, moving from lexical items, through phrases and clauses to sentences and the whole text. This approach ensures your understanding and application of the metalanguage of the grammatical analysis covered in previous chapters whilst also preparing you for a holistic appreciation of the text in Chap. 14. Please note, though, there is no intention to review everything covered in previous chapters: the focus is rather on exploring the salient features of the new text.
