Abstract
This chapter addresses how to coach parents through one of the most challenging aspects of parenting a young child—setting limits. It begins with the role of limit-setting in healthy attachment relationships. It describes how to present Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI) to parents and how to talk with parents about their feelings and concerns regarding discipline. It describes how to coach parents in setting limits with their child using PDI, how to explain PDI to the child, and how to gradually introduce this disciplinary procedure in the home.
