The Age of Clean Label Foods

Abstract

Traditional plasticizers used for packaging to keep the food quality over extended periods but are hazardous for health such as the conventional composite films consist of nano-silver as an antibacterial component that is potentially hazardous due to leakage of silver into the human body. Potential health and environmental issues associated with the current petrochemical packaging materials demand the development of clean label or bio-based food packaging that are non-toxic and free from any chemical. Along with that, antioxidant-rich bio-sources are being reviewed for advancement in active and intelligent packaging. Advanced food packaging materials are based on biodegradable polymers, which are sometimes incorporated with natural plant extracts as active antioxidants and antimicrobial agents to protect the food from spoilage by microorganisms and oxidation reactions. In this way, it increased recognition that more attention needs to be paid to reducing plastic waste and synthetic additives in food packaging applications. The quest for clean label solutions in active and intelligent packaging is a long-standing one and growing continuously in response to modern society’s challenges. Active packaging leads with oxygen scavengers, moisture and aroma absorbers, antioxidative and antimicrobial packaging. In contrast, intelligent packaging monitors packaged food quality by time-temperature indicator labels based on gas identification or color alterations. Thus, this review constitutes a new domain with advanced knowledge of available cost-effective and reliable bio-based packaging applications and extensive investigation of clean-label aspects of active and intelligent packaging.
