Abstract
What is design? For those in the business of education for design and technology, the question is simple but breath-taking and painful. How can design be taught and trained if one is not able to describe what design is? This paper is an exploration to find out the system, structure, elements, and aspects that found and define the concept of what design is. The approach to this investigation is philosophical; the design is conceived as the thing of making. The task of this study is to unveil the relationship between concepts and phenomena related to design. The relationship includes the networks of concepts and activities that matter for design. This study argues that design is the extension of a human hand for taking care of being in the life-world. Accordingly, the design is due to building a theoretical framework for a cyclic system of production and consumption. Based on this closed-loop, the design can minimize the entropy of production and consumption for sustainability.
