Sustainable Global Resources Of Seaweeds Volume 1

Abstract

Government of Mauritius has newly embarked on a new sector for the economy, namely the blue economy. Aquaculture is key among the various activities identified for future development. Not only will it represent a new income and employment generating activity, but it will also contribute to national food security. Mauritius has a seaweeds diversity of 435 species and probably more given the low research on seaweeds. The island hosts a significant density of certain important species for potential commercialization for both local and international markets. Yet, no seaweeds industries have been able to establish in Mauritius so far. The valorization and prioritization of seaweeds industries is crucial for Mauritius economy to flourish as this typical natural resource can be sustainably exploited in Mauritius. There is an imperative need to perform an in-depth investigation of the various seaweeds culture, abundance, and potential for commercialization into various products.
