Abstract

This chapter looks at the colonial history of Britain in Somalia and the implications of this imperial era. It also provides an account of the history of Somali migration into Britain and the changing identities and experiences of Somalis in Britain today. As the focuses of the book is on the experiences of young Somali men in Britain, it is important to outline the context in which both their Somali and British identities converge. This section provides a brief historic summary of the relationship between Somaliland and Britain (Lewis, 2002). The first section looks at the colonial history of Somaliland and legacy of colonialism that has resulted in a fraught relationship with Britain. The second section looks at the migration of Somalis to Britain and the social, cultural, economic, and religious challenges the community has and continues to face in Britain. This chapter sets the historic and contemporary context of Somalis living in Britain.
