Abstract
Piriformis syndrome is an underdiagnosed cause of buttock and leg pain that can be difficult to treat. In view of the distribution of the nerves and blood vessels that accompany the piriformis muscle through the greater sciatic foramen, it is understandable why contracture of a single muscle, the piriformis, can have such widespread effects. The diagnosis is mainly made on clinical grounds.
However, the term piriformis syndrome has been scrutinized recently for a few reasons. It is better termed as a subset of the deep gluteal syndrome.
