Handbook of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder

Abstract

Mental health assessment is an essential component of care for all people with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). However, the identification of mental health disorders is difficult due to the considerable symptom overlap between ASD and mental disorders and the problems of distinguishing between the conditions. The current chapter presents instruments developed to aid in the process of identifying mental health disorders in individuals with ASD. We discuss the uses and adaptations of conventional instruments for the assessment of mental health disorders in the general population, as well as clinical implications.
