Abstract
During the COVID-19 crisis, Denmark was rock-bottom on a pan-European tracker that was monitoring acts of solidarity among the EU member states. At the same time, surveys of public opinion also suggested that Danes did not expect to ever be at the receiving end of such EU solidarity. As citizens of a small country, most Danes are well aware of strong interdependencies among Europeans. Yet, despite five decades in the EU club, it has not become a reflex to think of the internal market as being an extension of Denmark. Whilst membership of the Union is very highly supported, there is still a sense of relief from the perception that Denmark can stay at arm’s length from others’ problems.
