Abstract

The sensitivity of modern voltage-clamp techniques allows detection of carrier-mediated transport provided that a large membrane surface is available. Xenopus oocytes are as an expression system an ideal preparation. Chapter 7 shall illustrate by three examples, the anion exchanger, the Na,K pump and the GABA transporter, characteristics of carriers compared to channels and how electrophysiological methods can be used for functional characterisation.
