Abstract
Social media can be used by users to communicate, and exchange information with each other. There has been a trend of global research on social media for elections in the last ten years. Therefore, this study aims to answer global research trends on social media for elections from 2010 to 2020. Method This study uses the Scopus search engine to identify social media literature for elections from 2010–2020. This study took articles from the Scopus database totaling 1555 documents. This study uses bibliometric analysis to complete records of every publication related to social media for elections, such as documents by affiliation, documents by country, documents by type, documents by source, and documents by year. This study uses VOS viewers for visualization analysis in the form of co-authorship and co-occurrence analysis. This study uses Nvivo 12 plus assistance to see the contribution of social media in the election. Finding in this study, the publication of global research on social media for elections from 2010 to 2020 has increased significantly every year. The United States has become the most contributing and leading country in global research on social media for election. Community Communication and Information and the Journal of Information Technology and Politics has the most publications related to social media research for election. Social media greatly contributed to the election both in political communication, candidate campaigns, and others. In future research, internet-based data collection systems associated with the public in elections will become increasingly popular.
