Summary
This chapter reviews first the socio-biological genealogy of rhythm and then Mazzola’s mathematical theory of meter and rhythm, together with associated topologies, as described in his book The Topos of Music.
We refer to Roger Matthew Grant’s excellent book Beating Time & Measuring Music in the Early Modern Era [52] for a historical discussion of musical meter theory.
