Abstract

Less common tumors of the thyroid gland, while rare, contribute significantly to overall morbidity and mortality related to thyroid cancer. Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, thyroid lymphoma, and metastases to the thyroid can be reviewed together as atypical presentations with important clinical features. Local invasion and airway management are among the critical factors to consider with these diseases. Swift diagnostic studies and pathologic confirmation will help in expediting treatment in these individuals. Surgical management is critical in some presentations. Novel treatments, reviewed here, are on the horizon for anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, with promise for improved survival. The critical issues of airway management in anaplastic thyroid carcinoma have been discussed in view of quality of life in these patients with quite limited life spans.
