Abstract

The content of this chapter includes an introduction to three thyroiditis syndromes – Hashimoto, de Quervain, and Riedel. The clinical presentation and diagnostic features of each are discussed in detail. Medical management for each condition is reviewed. Surgical indications for each type of thyroiditis are discussed, with a focus on clinical outcomes. While surgery is not often indicated for thyroiditis alone, surgical treatment of coexistent thyroid nodules or malignancy is often warranted. The impact of inflammatory thyroid conditions on the diagnostic evaluation of nodules and malignancy is reviewed. This chapter begins with a case example and a series of multiple-choice questions and answers to strengthen the reader’s understanding.
