Abstract
The Sultan Qaboos University Medical Education and Informatics Department was initially established as a Medical Education Unit in 2006. Its mission was to raise medical education standards by conducting research, teaching, and providing support in curriculum development, assessment, mentoring, student counseling, methods of teaching and learning, and information technology. In 2013, the unit was renamed the Medical Education and Informatics Unit (MEIU) to recognize the role of medical informatics. With few staff, MEIU activities depended mainly on the voluntary contributions of interested faculty and health professionals. In 2009, the MEIU took responsibility for the Clinical Skills Laboratory and, in 2013, appointed a student counselor. Following various challenges arising from its administrative status as a unit, the MEIU was converted to an official department in 2018.
