Handbook of Green and Sustainable Nanotechnology

Abstract

Sustainable nanotechnology is the manifestation of nanometer-scale technology with an emphasis on long-term economic feasibility and certainly a sensible use of natural resources while minimizing its adverse effects on human health and the environment. The engineered green nanomaterials (EGNMs) are being extensively used for the environmental remediation as it provides an innovative solution and certify a speedy and logical removal of pollutants. It is a well-known fact that the anthropogenic changes in the pervasiveness of naturally occurring nanomaterials may create hazardous wastes. The green nanomaterials put forward the highest standards of environmental safety and sustainability. The present chapter is mainly focused on the application of green nanomaterials for the remediation of the environmental pollutants such as water and soil using various treatment technologies, e.g., adsorption, chemical reactions, phytoremediation, photocatalysis, disinfection, and filtration. The chapter also presents a wide discussion of various green nanomaterials and polymer composites with different morphologies that are used for the accurate detection and substantial removal of environmentally hazardous gases, contaminated chemicals, organic pollutants, and biological substances from water and soil. In addition, recent advances in the fabrication of various novel nanoscale green materials have also been discussed. Furthermore, the research trends and future prospective of this area have been briefly elaborated.
