Abstract

The interaction of vehicle motion states with other approaching vehicles and roadside infrastructure equipment (RSE) is significant in improving safety driving manipulations, especially in case of emergency occasions. In this paper, a general schematic structure for heavy vehicle rollover warning system is designed based on cooperative vehicle and infrastructure system. The proposed connected vehicle V2I (vehicle to infrastructure) technology is used to communicate the roadside mounted monitoring devices with the vehicle on-board unit, then, a set of BSM (Basic Safety Message) messages describing road condition, real-time vehicle motion, driver behavior and traffic environment are derived for evaluating driving risk decision model. Moreover, a 3-D dynamic model for estimating heavy vehicle TTR (Time to Rollover) based on rollover threshold are established, which is used for inferring the LTR (Lateral Load Transfer Rate) rollover evaluation index. The results show that the improved method for heavy vehicle anti-rollover warning based on V2I technology is able to integrate more comprehensive factors, so as to provide more accurate prediction when compared with previous methods.
