Abstract

The mainstream biological theory in the second half of last century, represented by the iconic image of the double helix, implicated the sequence of DNA nucleotides as the Holy Grail of modern biology. The underlying metaphor was the code, i.e. decoding the language of DNA through its sequencing would have opened the way to understanding physiology and pathology. When a partial sequencing of human DNA was completed in the year 2000, this was hailed as the first step in a new biomedical revolution.
