Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Abstract

By using Fermi’s golden rule, the expression for the absorption signal and the intensity of the resonance lines at thermal equilibrium are derived, and the intensity of the spectrum is deduced, considering both homogeneous and inhomogeneous resonance lines. The spin-lattice relaxation and saturation phenomena are then described, leading to an expression for the absorption signal from a saturated line. Finally, the various spin-lattice relaxation processes are described, emphasizing the importance of spin-lattice relaxation in EPR spectroscopy.
