Definition

ESG integration consists of considering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria in traditional, mainstream, asset management. Environmental criteria refer to environmental impacts in product design, manufacturing, and distribution; social criteria relate to managing human resources and working conditions; and governance criteria relate to business practices toward shareholders, customers, and suppliers.

ESG integration in private equity (PE) is a relatively new phenomenon, as the movement to integrate ESG issues into the private equity industry really took off in 2009 with the adoption by the United States Private Equity Council rules of conduct covering ESG issues, followed by the creation of numerous working groups in professional organizations and within the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment and the development of formal...
