Abstract
This chapter shows how the language and structure of Gurney’s poems match the strangeness of his sensibility. It suggests that the forceful if disorientating irregularity of his poems stems from an effort to bring expression into close contact with inspiration. The idiosyncratic beauty of Gurney’s writing gives voice to the peculiar intensity of his processes of perception, thought, and feeling.
