Abstract
Temperature and exposure time are two critical factors in determining bone thermal damage. However, the majority of existing models are two-dimensional and made only for single-pass drilling, which cannot be expanded to analyze thermal interactions between multiple drilling passes and the overall temperature field in a 3D complex bone geometry. Further, there does not exist a damage model to incorporate temperature and time effect to predict the necrosis. This chapter presents a 3D finite element thermal model, based on the previous chapters, and a thermal damage criterion to estimate necrosis in bone drilling, particularly for sequential, multiple hole drilling in bone.
