Abstract
In this chapter, the topic is switched from metal drilling in the factory to bone drilling in the operation room at the hospital. Orthopaedic surgeons perform bone drilling in daily surgical operations. Bone drilling is common for screw placement, microfracture, or for surface preparation to aid in joint fusion, in which multiple sequential passes are made. This chapter studies and compares the heat generation among different surgical drills and investigates the sequential drilling of bone using a clinically relevant environment. The heat generated by standard drills has been studied, including the effects of the drill diameter, speed, and feed rate. The experimental methods, sample preparation, and analysis method for cadaveric bone drilling are elaborated.
