Abstract
Oesophageal atresia with proximal tracheo-oesophageal fistula (Figure 11.1) is an uncommon anatomical variant of oesophageal atresia and one with a relatively high incidence of complications. This is the result of a number of factors including diagnostic difficulties in demonstrating the upper pouch fistula, the long gap which may be present between the two oesophageal segments, and the fact that a proximal fistula is more likely to allow soiling of the lung. The management of this anomaly is, therefore, a challenge in both diagnostic and technical terms.
