Abstract

This paper presents an overview of progress in magnetic disk drive technology, and discusses the future prospects for high-density magnetic recording.

Recent progress of magnetic materials for thin-film heads and media has greatly improved read/write performance, kee** pace with requirements of high density recording. I review the research key areas of current thin-film head and media technology. I also consider the barriers to be overcome to realise ultra-high density magnetic recording approaching 20 Mbits/mm2.
