Abstract

The experience with the [female condom] allowed us to re-assess our decision-making capacity, our right to health services, the importance of our bodies as our work tool, the importance of self-care and the perception of risk as key factors to move ourselves towards self-protection and prevention. This device is of great help to prevent HIV infection, but more important, it can help liberate that woman who is now a victim of machismo, infected not only with the virus, but also mentally and spiritually with a selfishness that has no place in a couple’s relationship (Colimoro, 1993).
