Structural Properties and Phase Transitions of Graphite Intercalation Compounds

Intercalation in Layered Materials

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSB,volume 148))

Abstract

In this contribution I would like to present an overview of the structural properties and phase transitions of graphite intercalation compounds (hereafter noted GICs). Because of their intrinsic anisotropy these materials provide very attractive opportunities for studying structural phase transitions as a function of dimensionality. Quite naturally structural studies have taken an important and productive part in the renewed interest of the past ten years for GICs. Although several recent review papers [1,2,3,4] have dealt with the structural properties of GICs numerous new results have enlarged our knowledge in the past 2 or 3 years. However the aim of the present article is not to give a comprehensive review of the subject but to focus on selected structural results which are representative examples of the exciting, albeit complex, structural phenomena encountered in GICs. I also hope to convince the reader that despite the important efforts made recently, our knowledge and understanding are still poor in many cases and that these studies are bound to develop rapidly in the next years.
