Abstract

Fracture is one of the most intriguing processes in material science and engineering as it is associated with the life and safety of engineering components. The mechanisms leading to fracture are very complex and have been studied extensively. From a materials science point-of-view, there are many different types of fracture behaviours. These fracture behaviours can essentially be divided into three categories: (a) a ductile fracture mode with micro-void coalescence (b) a transgranular cleavage mode and (c) a brittle intergranular mode. These fracture modes have been used to investigate the fractal characteristics of different fracture mechanisms.
