Abstract

The incidence of divorce has exhibited an upward trend for several years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Census (1977), the divorce rate doubled from 2.3 per 1,000 people in 1963 to 4.8 per 1,000 in 1975. The number of divorces rose from 0.4 million in 1960 to 1.1 million in 1976 (Glick, 1979). These figures are enormous compared with the estimated number of divorces in 1867 of 10,000 or 0.3 per 1,000 (Derdeyn, 1976).
