Abstract

There has been considerable evidence for an effect of calcium on the absorption of phosphate by the kidney. Two micropuncture studies have agreed that increasing serum calcium enhances distal nephron phosphate absorption.1,2 However, in the proximal tubule, one study found enhancement of phosphate absorption,1 the other inhibition.2 Because the various indirect effects of increasing serum calcium may have played a role in the outcome of in vivo studies, an in vitro study using the technique of isolated tubule microperfusion was designed.
