Abstract
The pathology caused by parasites, the most prevalant infectious diseases of humankind, can be divided into two major aspects: the first relates to the effects of the parasite per se, e.g., iron deficiency anemia, secondary to blood loss caused by intestinal nematodes; hemolytic anemia, secondary to intracellular protozoans; or hepatobiliary fibrosis, secondary to toxic products produced by intraductal trematodes. However, in many parasitic conditions there is limited pathology directly attributable to the parasite. Most host morbidity is related to the immunoinflammatory response of the host to the parasite. This reaction is the principal subject of this chapter.
