Abstract
Combinations of organic polymers and metals have fulfilled important roles as structural components, and have been used for very visible applications in the automotive and aerospace industries. In these industries metal/polymer composites have met physical design requirements with significant savings in weight over corresponding all metal components. To aircraft designers these savings are equated with higher speeds and greater payloads. For automotive designers there are manufacturing advantages to be gained in the use of polymers for joining, in one assembly, multiple metal components.
