Symmetry Breaking and the Control of Harmonics with Strong Short Laser Pulses

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSB,volume 316))

Abstract

Since the beginning of nonlinear optics it has been thought that a system with inversion symmetry cannot radiate even-order harmonics of the incident laser light. The purpose of this paper is to show that this is not always true. In fact, emission of even harmonics from a system with inversion symmetry will be typical for the interaction with intense ultrashort laser pulses.
