Tumor Cloning Assay: Application and Potential Usefulness in Lung Cancer Management

  • Chapter
Biology and Management of Lung Cancer

Part of the book series: Cancer Treatment and Research ((CTAR,volume 11))

Abstract

The use of the clonogenic or stem-cell assay in clinical practice has demonstrated exponential growth over the past five years. An attempt will be made to outline the development of this system, including both practical and theoretical considerations. The current status of the assay in terms of its usefulness and its problems will be explored. In addition, the current data on correlations between in vitro results and clinical results will be presented. The last sections will be devoted to an analysis of one laboratory’s data on the application of this system to patients with lung cancer. For further general considerations of the cloning assay, the reader is referred to recent comprehensive reviews of the system [1–4].
