Pregnancy, Lactation, and Breast Cancer

Lactation

Abstract

Breast cancer accounts for 20% of all cancer deaths among women in the United States. This disease is the third leading cause of cancer deaths today, affecting in their lifetime, 1 out of every 13 women. When carcinoma of the breast is diagnosed in a pregnant or lactating woman, it is particularly tragic. Breast cancer coinciding with pregnancy or lactation occurs about once in every 1000 pregnancies, and represents 1% of total breast cancers. If only women of childbearing age are considered, then the reported frequencies of coincidence range from 7 to 14% of breast cancers.
