Maternal Problems in Lactation

  • Chapter
Lactation

Abstract

Until relatively recent times, survival of human newborns depended upon maternal or surrogate human milk. The recognition of possible maternal problems related to lactation now commonly leads to discontinuation of breast-feeding often on inadequate grounds. Maternal complications associated with breast-feeding are diverse and often difficult to manage, frequently because of their interdisciplinary nature. As these problems are more completely understood, it becomes apparent that the majority of mothers may be supported in their decision to nurse. In this chapter, we will consider acute and chronic maternal medical problems in their relation to breast-feeding.
