Abstract
In the early 1970’s methods were invented that revolutionized the study of individual eukaryotic genes by allowing molecular analysis of any gene of phenotypic interest, independent of the abundance of its products. This was particularly important in the case of developmental control genes, because such genes were expected to encode mRNAs and proteins of low abundance.
