Abstract
In a remarkable monograph, E. and F. Cosserat [71] gave a systematic development of the mechanics of continuous media in which each point has the six degree of freedom of a rigid body. The orientation of a given particle of such a medium can be represented mathematically by the values of three mutually perpendicular unit vectors which Ericksen and Truesdell [98] called directors. In the 1960s the subject matter was reopened in various papers (see Eringen and Suhubi [100], Green and Rivlin [125], Mindlin [263]). These early theories are discussed in various works (see, e.g., Truesdell and Toupin [366, Eringen [105], Kunin [230], Capriz [38]).
